the Good, the Bad, & the Rusty- This old house and all her stuff Part 1

This is where we make memories.
Our house the morning after a carne asada, and I already had cleaned up a bit lol. It's messy, it's old, but it's ours.

Happy Monday! I'm super late posting today because, honestly, it just hasn't been as easy for me to tap into my creative energy lately. If you have any tips let me know! I decided today was a good day to share a bit about our home. She's so easy to appreciate on sunny days like this. The light hits the trees just right and with it being almost spring, flowers are blooming all over the place. Our house and land is pretty big compared to our old house so I thought it would be best to do this as a two part post. This post will be all about the visual. But first, let me tell you a bit about who she is. Our home is a baby blue, traditional style, 4 bedroom, 1 bath, two story, 1,284 sq ft home. We live on a little over 2 1/3rd acres located in Western Washington, specifically just outside of Tacoma city limits, near Puyallup. We are about an hour south of Seattle. Around here people say "Pardon me" when they are about to cross in front of you, they ride their horses down the street, and it's surprisingly (to me at least) diverse. It's very relaxing and picturesque. But back to our home. She was the 5th house we looked at in the area. It was difficult finding a house in our price range with over an acre of land and lots of people were interested in her. We had to out bid 4 other offers which made her fairly expensive compared to what she was listed at and we ended up paying 50k over asking. At first I wasn't too sure that we made the right choice but now I'm perfectly happy with her and am starting to see the beauty in all her flaws. The previous owner had lived here for over 50 years and raised his 4 children here. He remarried late in life and when he died his wife of 8 years sold the property and left most everything here. He seemed to be a bit of a collector to say the least and we inherited quite a bit of baggage. But you'll see most of that in my next post. It also seems he wasn't big on updating lol but he did take good care of it. Today I want to show you my favorite parts of the inside of my house as well as some of the cool old stuff I've found and put to use.

Ode to fairy doors, aka tiny closet doors, some so small I practically have to crawl into them lol. The first pic is a regular size door on my daughters closet. The second is a door to a closet practically big enough to be a small room. All the closets in my house are the old fashioned storage kind and two of the bedrooms have rods installed for hanging clothes.

Beauty and the junk. My favorite window in the house which of course overlooks my beloved tire swing in the front yard. The second picture sums up how the house looked when we moved in, overstuffed with junk, but they are actually old pieces that are in pretty much mint condition. I really have a new appreciation for how they made things back in the day, they are sturdier than anything you can buy today. The third pic is of my favorite glass jars that I found dusty and filled with old rose petals under the kitchen sink. All washed and shiny now. And the copper rose is so pretty and delicate, I don't even remember where I found it.

Furniture and stuff. I absolutely love my antique wooden chairs that I found in the upstairs closet. I also found the pillow which our Chihuahua/pug adopted. Our cute two oven stove, and what I like to call the grandma couch, also left behind by the previous owner. The pillows are just stuff I found in the attic. We keep this couch outside on the porch so its not color schemed or anything. And every house buyers dream, pulling up carpet and finding real hardwood floors. They could use some work but my husband stained them best he can for now and they will be a future project.

Rooms, rooms, rooms. The laundry room- as much as it annoys me for its tiny size, I love it, I took down some heavy old curtains and now its bright and airy. I'm actually thinking of getting rid of the washer and dryer and turning it into a mud room because its really just too small. My favorite part of this room are the hooks on the wall. Then you see my 1940's kitchen. It's very retro and cute and I'm stubbornly opposed to updating it. The next picture is of the dining area. the table and two wooden chairs were found here in the stuffed closet above. I really love the cute built in shelf but I'm having trouble finding what to put on it because the shelves are so close together practically nothing fits. The brown praying hands were also found here, even though the previous owners were white lol. The last picture is of my daughter in the upstairs hallway, one of the only things in the house that is bigger than a modern version. You can see we still have some stuff to clean out. Little by little as they say.

Vintage dressers. All found here (even the cactus) and pretty much in perfect condition. The mirrored dresser is a bit dated for my taste but my stepson didn't have a problem cleaning it up and putting it to use the first day he was here. The white shelf seemed custom built for the closet it was in. We got it out and now my son uses it in his room.

Pretty little things. More pretty glass jars in the kitchen, and do you see how adorable the wall paper is? A few people have told me they remember their great aunties or grandmothers having the exact same wall paper! I really feel like these old locks give the house character. The mirrors, lamp, and vase are one of many I've been finding and using around the house.

I hope you enjoyed this little inside peek of our home! I'm still working on making this feel like my own but I'm definitely having fun finding all these cute vintage (and even not so vintage) belongings and making them feel at home here again. Do you love antiques or anything retro? If you have any tips, let me know! I'd love to see your ideas on how you incorporate vintage items into your décor.
